An affective inquiry into collaging: Possibilities for (re-)presenting health and fitness?

This data analysis workshop re-visits data generated from a nine-week scrapbooking project exploring pedagogical sites related to health and fitness (gyms, magazines, internet). The scrapbooking, which involved four Black and Latinx youth and myself (White, female) took place at the end of an 18-month visual ethnography in an urban after-school setting. In re-visiting the data, I began to draw on affect and collage-as-analysis to reimagine human and non-human bodies entangled in health and fitness. I aim to continue collaging to produce (new) openings for youth across pedagogical sites of health and fitness.

Asset minded approaches to science and math education can greatly improve the experiences of diverse school populations. Community mapping is one method to bring narratives from the community and its members into the classroom’s practices and curricula. This practice, though rich with opportunities for learning, is absent in teacher education. As part of a research-practice partnership, novice urban teachers participated in community walks and mapped the assets highlighted by the community members and are currently working towards bringing these assets into their teaching practice. We bring sample maps and excerpts from interviews with teachers for discussion with the community.
